Announcing Shorter+Sweeter : The Best of Short+Sweet at the Madinat Theatre

For the first time ever in Dubai, Constellation presents Shorter+Sweeter - the best of Short+Sweet Dubai

A night of the best plays from Short+Sweet, the world’s largest ten-minute play festival, performed by some of Dubai’s best actors and brought to the stage in stunning productions by Artistic Director Liz Hadaway and Associate Director Sidd Jose, at the magnificent Madinat Theatre.

These ten-minute theatrical gems have been carefully selected from the first three years of Short+Sweet Dubai to create a brilliant evening of world class theatre.

For two nights only on Thursday May 7th and Friday May  8th @ 8pm, with a Family Friendly Matinee @ 3pm on May 8th, this selection of Short+Sweet’s best ever plays will be performed by an ensemble featuring some of Dubai’s best actors including Beth Burrows, Mike Green, Shereen Saifudeen, Taraash Mehrotra and Salman Qureshi.

The plays include:

Treteau, written and directed by Sanjeev Dixit, which scooped the pool at the 2015 Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival winning Best Overall Production, People’s Choice Award for the audience’s favourite play, Best Director and Best Script (joint). It’s your last chance to see this amazing piece of theatre, one of the best works ever seen in Short+Sweet worldwide, performed by the original cast!;

Perfect Stillness, by Jane Miller, Best Overall Production and People’s Choice Award at Short+Sweet Dubai 2013 and Short+Sweet Melbourne 2006;

The Royal Shakespeareans present ‘Romeo & Juliet’ by Vikram Ahuja, Salman Qureshi and Hananah Zaheer, People’s Choice winner Short+Sweet Dubai 2014 and

somewhere between the sky and the sea by the world’s leading ten-minute playwright, Dubai’s own Alex Broun, which won Best Overall Production Short+Sweet Malaysia 2008, People's Choice Award Short+Sweet Singapore 2008 and Best Overall Production Short+Sweet Delhi 2011.

As an added bonus David Ives’ legendary ten-minute masterpiece, Sure Thing, directed by Best Director of Short+Sweet Dubai 2014, Gautam Goenka, and performed by Best Actor Short+Sweet Dubai 2015, Asad Raza Khan, and Butool Zaidi.

Local writers also feature in the night with Clifford Single’s hilarious Friends and Colleagues (Best Script Short+Sweet Dubai 2013) and Russell Bell’s social media satire,Tagged, written while Russell was living in Dubai and a Gala Finalist at Short+Sweet Dubai 2014 and Short+Sweet Sydney 2015.

There’s also two of the funniest plays ever performed at Short+Sweet, which have delighted audiences at Short+Sweet Festivals around the globe, Last Drinks by Greg Gould and No.22 by Adele Vuko.

The play also won the Audience Favorite award at Diez Minutos 2014 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Phew! To tag or not to tag? THAT is the question. Tagged is a relationship melodrama for the modern age, warning us all that no secret is safe from social media. And it seems that no hemisphere is immune to the script writing talent of Russell Bell, a formerly Dubai based writer with a background in acting and comedy in LA.

The jewel in the crown of Shorter+Sweeter at the Madinat is a guest performance of Tréteau, winner of Best Overall Production, People’s Choice Award, Best Director and jointly Best Script in Short+Sweet Dubai this year. Says the show’s creator, local writer and director Sanjeev Dixit, “I don’t know how to describe this play; some alternate titles were ‘It’s All Been Done Before Too’ and ‘Think Inside The Box’. I suppose in many ways it’s a distillation of my love - our love - for the theatre”. Under Sanjeev’s direction once again, the enchanting cast of Shereen Saifudeen, Minali Patel, Ushma Shah Jasuja, Cmith Sarkar, Dharam Veer Sood, Siddarth Sivaprakash, and Sunil Jasuja from Third Half Theatre will be taking you on quite a theatrical journey.

You meet someone in a cafe. You're interested. What next? How many ways are there for you to completely sabotage your own chances of success? We’ll be taking a look in the unique Sure Thing, our second guest performance and global short play hit. President of Dubai’s largest community group Backstage, the supremely talented Gautam Goenka ‘wowed’ judges with his super-slick production of this play in Short+Sweet Dubai 2014 winning him the Best Director Award. Asad Raza Khan will be taking on the male lead, the same lead he took on back in 2014 which bagged-him a Best Actor nomination (Asad going on to win Best Actor in Short+Sweet Dubai 2015). Butool Zaiadi will be taking on the female lead. Brought to you by such an outstanding team, Sure Thing is sure to be hit once again with the Madinat crowds.
